If you’re like me, then flexibility isn’t your strong suit. My hips are tight, I can’t sit in Indian style position for extended periods of time and touching my toes is a tad bit painful. However, I’ve made a commitment this year to stretch daily, before and after my workouts and thus far I’ve noticed a reduction in muscle soreness, increase in recovery times, and just an overall better feeling about my flexibility! See below for my five benefits of stretching.
5 Benefits of Stretching
1. Flexibility Improvement: Stretching helps increase flexibility by lengthening muscles and improving the range of motion around joints. This increased flexibility can enhance your ability to perform daily activities and reduce the risk of injuries, especially in activities that require a full range of motion.
2. Injury Prevention: Regular stretching can help prevent injuries by promoting better joint health and muscle function. It prepares your muscles for physical activity by increasing blood flow and oxygen supply, making them more resilient and less prone to strains, sprains, or other injuries.
3. Posture Enhancement: Stretching can contribute to better posture by releasing tension in muscles that may be causing poor alignment. Proper posture not only helps prevent musculoskeletal problems but also supports overall spinal health and reduces the risk of back pain.
4. Stress Reduction: Stretching promotes relaxation by releasing muscle tension and improving blood circulation. It also encourages a mindful focus on your body and breathing, which can help alleviate stress and anxiety. Incorporating stretching into your routine can serve as a form of relaxation and stress relief.
5. Improved Athletic Performance: Athletes often include stretching in their training routines to enhance performance. Improved flexibility and range of motion can lead to better agility, balance, and coordination. Stretching also helps prevent muscle imbalances that may hinder athletic performance or lead to overuse injuries.
How Can I increase My Mobility?
Simple answer to this question is to just practice every day. Be consistent!! Spend 15 – 30 mins each day stretching, yoga and Pilates are great methods that involve building strength and increasing mobility. If there are specific areas of your body that you wish to increase flexibility on such as the hips then do your research; practice specific exercises that target the hips. Best wishes my friends and remember… One Day @ at a Time!
